Sit-in protests by the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) demanding inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribes list of India continued in Manipur.

The STDCM, along with the Western Star Club, Langjing Women Welfare Association and Meira Paibis, staged a sit-in at Langjing Achouba Keithel on Friday pressing for its demand to give constitutional safeguard to Meetei/Meitei community by recognising it as Scheduled Tribe.

The protesters decried the "indifferent attitude" of the government towards the demand for almost a decade.

STDCM general secretary K Bhogendrajit said that the government must respect the democratic approach adopted by the committee.

“The government is compelling us to adopt violent and undemocratic forms of agitations since it does not budge with the peaceful protests,” he contended.

He mounted pressure on the government to furnish requisite documents for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list without further delay.
