MP Leishemba Sanajaoba raises concern over dying traditional art of Manipuri Muslims

The Meitei Pangal Eegi Khongul Leeba Committee stated that the maharaja of Manipur and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba called on the Manipuri Muslims communities at his residential complex at the royal palace, Imphal on Tuesday.

Preserving the unique cultural heritage, traditional art and craft of the Meitei Pangals (Manipuri Muslims), adoption of clans (surnames) in giving their identity, proper documentations of the clan systems granted by the then king of Manipur, revival of the Kaji Loishang system in the aspects of culture and traditions, etc. were some of the main highlights as emphasised by the MP in the meeting, stated a release.

Sanajaoba assured that he would look into the issues as a representative and a leader by extending support in all possible ways to uplift the socioeconomic, educational and cultural status of the Meitei Pangal communities, it stated.

He also expressed concern on the dying traditional art and crafts of the Meitei Pangals, the discontinuing status of the cultural synthesis with the Meitei counterparts, the traditional skills possessed by their forefathers which became almost extinct since the last few decades, it mentioned.

He also emphasised on the revival of the ‘Kaji Loishang’ by constituting a board considering the traditional and cultural aspects. He also emphasised on adopting the historical and cultural aspects of the Meitei- Pangals in the School syllabus and curriculum under the NEP 2020.

He maintained that the skills of the rich traditional art and crafts of the Meitei-Pangals should be conserved and fostered by adopting the ‘64 Kalaas’ which are being emphasised in the NEP 2020, it stated.

The annual meeting with the Manipuri Muslims under the theme ‘Eegi-Khongul Leeba amasung Pukmen-Paomennaba’ has been organised at the Sana Konung by the Committee, Manipur on July 17 every year since 2019, it stated.

However, as Leishemba Sanajaoba has already been engaged in the upcoming Parliament sessions and the ensuing presidential election, the meeting for this year has been rescheduled on Tuesday, it mentioned.

The meeting was attended by the members of the Eegi khongul leeba led by its president Bm Yaima Shah and many other representatives, including the vice president of the Committee Bm Fajur Rahman, secretary Bm Abdul Majid, chief advisor Sm Salim Shah and other executive members; representatives from various Metei-Pangal concentrated areas, it added.
