The unknown disease causing death to bovine animals, has reportedly claimed more than 25 asiatic water buffaloes and 10 cows and rendered several others in critical condition at Chingjaroi village in Manipur's north of Ukhrul district. The disease has caused irreversible loss to many cattle owners.
With several cattle still missing, the exact figure of death could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report.
When the Imphal Free Press first made the report about the disease that hit the cattle farmers of Chingjaroi, the death toll remained at six, though many were missing. The disease appears to show no sign of slowing down and continues to spread further.
Sources said that the dreaded disease has so far claimed around 25 plus water buffaloes and 10 cows in Chingjaroi village and left several in critical conditions. “The sick livestock showed acute nasal dryness, nasal bleeding, breathlessness, foamy saliva, tongue blistering and hood infection rendering them unfit to eat.”

One Apam, a cattle farmer, told the Imphal Free Press on Thursday that scores of cattle have begun to show bodily weaknesses. “I am afraid that more cattle would succumb to the dreaded disease if remedial measures are not initiated by the authority concerned. Timely intervention is all that we need to contain the disease from spreading further,” he said.
When the case was first reported in Kharasom CV and Tusom village in north of Ukhrul district in March 2022, it claimed around 23 water buffaloes.
The ailing buffaloes showed symptoms of breathlessness, foamy saliva and nasal dryness.
It is worth mentioning that in the first week of November 2021, around 256 water buffaloes of asiatic breed had reportedly fallen prey to Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS) outbreak at Wahong, Tusom, Kharasom and Razai Khullen village.
In their sample, heart, lungs, and body fluid were examined and the result was found to be all positive.
The report was based on the sample examination conducted on the bovine breed by the Advanced Animal Disease Diagnosis and Management College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, Guwahati on October 16, 2021.
Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS) was also detected in the post mortem of buffalo tissue and body fluid samples collected from October 1 to 6 by PCR with KIMTI primers.
