The unknown disease that had killed many water buffaloes in Ukhrul in 2021 has revisited Kharasom village and Tusom village in north of Ukhrul district, claiming around 23 Asiatic water buffaloes.

According to sources, the dead buffaloes showed symptoms of breathlessness, foamy saliva and nasal dryness.

The exact figure of death, however, could not be ascertained due to the vastness of the topographical area, sources added.

It may be mentioned that the Imphal Free Press had earlier reported about the outbreak of the said epidemic in the later part of 2021.

As many as 256 Water Buffaloes of the Asiatic breed belonging to different owners had reportedly succumbed to Septicamia (HS) in 2021.

Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS), a contagious bacterial disease which affects cattle and water buffaloes with high mortality rate in affected animals, was said to be detected in the sample result of the water buffaloes affected by the Asiatic Water Buffalo epidemic in Ukhrul district earlier in October 2021.

The sample result of the lab test indicated the presence of Pasteurella organism which according to the concerned department could be isolated and demonstrated.

Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS), according to studies, is a contagious bacterial disease caused by two serotypes of Pasteurella multocida, B2 and E2. It affects cattle (Bos taurus and B. indicus) and water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) with a high mortality rate in infected animals. There is no specific treatment or cure for VHS. It is said to be a major cause of livestock mortality in tropical regions of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

“With majority of the inhabitants in the area being farmers, cattle rearing remains one of our main occupation,” Ashang Shimray, a native of north of Ukhrul district told the IFP on Thursday, adding that they use water buffalos widely for agricultural purposes.
