Manipur Shiv Sena on Wednesday announced that the party will give priority to women candidates in the upcoming three-tier local body election.

State party president M Tombi made the announcement while addressing mediapersons in Imphal on Wednesday.

Tombi also said the state party has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the last day of the recent Parliament session, listing several demands for the state.

The memorandum was submitted in New Delhi through Union Minister of State RK Ranjan on January 5, he said,

The memorandum included the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the list of scheduled tribes; upgrading of Tongjei Maril (Old Cachar road) to a four-lane road; fencing of international border and adoption of an appropriate land law in the entire state, Tombi said.

He pointed out that around 8 per cent of the geographical land is located in the valley area and the remaining areas in hill districts of Manipur.

As per the present land laws, the people in the valley are not allowed to settle in the hill districts though the people of hills can settle in both the hills and the valley, he said.

He appealed to the government to take necessary steps for mounting pressure on the Central government and endorse the memorandum which the party had submitted to the Central leaders for adoption of an appropriate land law in the state.

The appropriate laws should be adopted before the railway services arrive in the state, he said.

Regarding border fencing, Tombi said that the media have been reporting on the constant seizing of drugs in the state and as well in the neighboring states from vehicles coming from Manipur.

There is a strict checkpoint at Khudengthabi along Imphal-Moreh national highway; however, the seizing of illegal drugs coming from beyond the border has been increasing, he said. If the border fencing is completed, then the issue could be completely reduced, he added.

As a part of the function, the party president launched its official party website www. shivsenamanipurpradesh.com.

Tombi said the official website was launched to bring transparency in the functioning of the party’s activities. Any individual who wants to join the party can enroll through the website, he added.
