Villagers of Pumlen Yangbi fear their village may soon turn into a wetland, and have drawn the attention of the state government to save them. They also urged the government for cleaning up Pumlenpat.

Addressing the press on Saturday at the Manipur Press Club, Pumlen Yangbi Development Organisation vice president Inganba Waikhom said due to the Loktak project, the Imphal River flow was blocked and the water is now flowing towards Pumlenpat.

Some agricultural lands have been innundated and the continuous spread of thick biomass in the lake has blocked the paths, he added.

Informing that 80 per cent of the lake has been covered with weed and biomass, Inganba Waikhom said that the state government had always assured of extending support to the poor but have failed to understand the real problems of the people who are depending on the lake as a means of livelihood.

Therefore, the villagers demand the state government to clean up the weeds in the water body as soon as possible, he said.
