Villagers, media team stop wildfire in Kamjong's Thawai village

Wildfire ravaged a forest in Thawai hill range which is located nearly 3 km away from the Thawai village.

Massive wildfire engulfed the hill range of Thawai (Thoyee) village under Phungyar assembly constituency, Kamjong district on Saturday. As the fire progressed, villagers of Thawai village and a team of media persons rushed to the spot and together stopped the raging wildfire.

The wildfire was first noticed around 5 pm on Thawai hill range which is located nearly 3 km away from the Thawai village.

Committee of Civil Society Kangleipak (CCSK) president also took part in dousing the wild flames, while the cause of the wildfire is yet to be ascertained.

According to villagers, the fire might have been sparked off by miscreants for cultivation purposes. They expressed that locals along with the team rushed to the site equipped with tree branches and plant stalks to put out the fire and managed to stop only the downward progression of the fire.

Speaking to the media, village secretary of Thawai village, Kharaomi Muinao asserted that Thawai village has a strict forest management and restrictions system regarding such deplorable actions.

The secretary also maintained that Thawai and its neighboring villages had an agreement regarding the use of forest land.

He exhorted the people to conserve and safeguard the forest and expressed gratitude to the media team for their quick action in putting out the fire.

He further appealed to people to prevent any activities that may sparked off wildfire and destroy the rich forests in the future.
