Thirty days, and violence continues in strife-torn Manipur; more houses burned

Over 2000 women who were spending the night at the intersection of Pheidinga and Khurkhul stopped the vehicles of the security forces from entering the Sports University. They said the registration numbers of the AR vehicles were smeared with mud.

Three houses and a sawmill were set ablaze by suspected Kuki militants in Apun Lok under the jurisdiction of Kangchup Police station in Imphal West district on Friday at around 11:30 pm.

The sawmill which was burned down belongs to one Mangsatabam Inaobi from Loitang Khunou who is currently staying at Kangchup Chingkhong.

Meanwhile, suspected Kuki militants fired gunshots at Nongthonband village under the jurisdiction of Sekmai Police station in Imphal West district on Saturday at around 12:30 am.

The villagers retaliated and fired back to protect themselves. However, no casualties were reported till the filing of this report.

Suspected Kuki militants and unknown miscreants also continued their shootout at Kangchup Hill in K Songlung village under the jurisdiction of Kangchup Police station.

The shootout started on Friday at around 2:22 pm and continued in the wee hours of Saturday, lasting till 5 am, police sources said.

Imphal West SP S Ibomcha visited the area on Saturday morning but no casualties were reported.

In another incident, eight Assam Rifles vehicles who came for duty at Sports University in Koutruk, Imphal West district were denied entry by a large number of women protesters on Saturday at around 5:30 am.

More than 2000 women who were spending the night at the intersection of Pheidinga and Khurkhul stopped the vehicles from entering the university.

According to the women protesters, the registration numbers of the AR vehicles were smeared with mud.

Relief for violence victims

Meanwhile, the Salai Apunba Nupi Lamjing Lup (SANULAL) on Saturday provided relief items including medicines to the affected victims at the relief camps and volunteers guarding the villages.

A team of the association visited Phayeng Freedom Hill Camp wherein they distributed the items, stated a release.

SANULAL also condemned the narco-terrorism and brutalities against civilians and said that such is against the international humanitarian law, it mentioned.

Meanwhile, the Kanglei Sintha Semkat Sakat Lup, Singjamei Bazar also extended relief materials and financial aid to Thongju Constituency relief camp opened at Ideal Girls College Akampat in Imphal East District on Saturday, stated a release.

The association also urged the authorities concerned to devise ways to resolve the prevailing communal conflict.

The Organisation for a Better Society (OBS), Western Palace Compound, Imphal East has extended financial support to the six patients from the communal clash, who have been undergoing treatment at Kripadashini Advanced Hospital, Palace Compound, Imphal East.

The injured persons who received financial aid are 37-year-old Kongkham Manao of Serou Awang leikai, 24-year-old Saikhom James from Khangabok, 24-year-old Moirangthem Premananda of Yairipok, 26-year-old Sinam Ranjan from Angtha Sinam Leikai, 41-year-old Salam Gyanendra Singh of Moirang Khunou and 34-year-old Elialong from Senapati.

The club said that they will further extend financial support to those injured persons admitted in Advanced Hospital and Kripadashini Advanced Hospital situated under the jurisdiction of the club.

Blood Donation

Reaching out to the victims, members of CCIAN Forum, 1996-98 batch, on Saturday organised a blood donation camp at Shija Hospitals, Langol in aid of the victims of the current ensuing violence in the state.

Taking part in the camp, general secretary of the forum, Angomcha Chingkhei, said that the camp is being organised to help the displaced persons from the ethnic clash.

He also appealed to the people of the state to extend every help possible and to support the victims.

Chingkhei also urged the Indian and Manipur government to bring a solution to end the empasse at the earliest.

The Relief Committee JNIMS, Porompat on Saturday conveyed appreciation for the generous donations of philanthropists of the state and requested all to continue such aid and support for the victims of the prevailing crisis.

A release issued by the committee stated that the Relief Committee JNIMS has spent more than Rs 3 lakh in treating 238 injured victims of the ongoing crisis from May 3 to June 2.

Many philanthropists and generous people have donated a total of around Rs 1.4 lakh to date, it stated.

The committee also requested all to continue such aid and support for the victims of the prevailing crisis in the state, it added.
