The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) authority on Friday vehemently condemned the vandalisation of RIMS property and assault on security personnel by a mob on Thursday.

RIMS, in a release, stated that a group of people from Lamphel Khunou carried out the unruly act on Thursday around 10 am without any provocation. They dismantled the barricades put up near the entrance gates, damaged properties and even assaulted the civil security personnel causing injuries to them, the hospital alleged.

It pointed out that RIMS eastern side gate was kept open for the convenience of the residents of Lamphel Khunou in addition to one gate which was always opened near the Mortuary. It maintained that outsiders are restricted from entering the campus in view of the ongoing unrest in the state and for security reasons.

However, there is no restriction in the movement of residents of Lamphel Khunou for their religious and domestic works etc. as per direction of the District court, it asserted. It further decried the allegations made by Lamphel Khunou Meira paibi Secretary, Karam Chaoba Devi on print and electronic media and termed it as baseless as RIMS, Imphal has not violated the court order.

RIMS reiterated its condemnation against such acts of violence and goondaism and appealed to those concerned not to repeat such acts in future and not take the law into their own hands.

It may be recalled that irate meira paibis of Lamphel Khunou on Thursday forcefully removed the barricades erected on the route located on the northern side of RIMS Morgue, alleging that RIMS authority had been putting hindrances to the movement of the locals by ignoring the court directives to remove the barricades.

Lamphel Khunou meira paibi, secretary K Chaoba said that the court had announced on September 5, 2014 that RIMS Authority must not put hindrances on the movement of people, domestic works and religious activities on the said route. However, after G Sunil Kumar Sharma took charge as the director, RIMS security allegedly started harassing the locals commuting along the particular route by questioning them or prohibiting their movement, Chaoba added.

She  mentioned that on February 16, 2024, a fresh order was issued directing RIMS to stop blocking the route, but RIMS Authority allegedly ignored the directives issued by the Court and continued harassing the locals by erecting barricades.
