Locals of Top Chingtha Mathak Leikai on Friday imposed a blockade at Azad Golai to Nongpok Keithelmanbi road under Andro assembly constituency, Imphal East, protesting the alleged negligence of the authorities regarding the road construction.
The locals of the region demonstrated various forms of protests along different regions of the road including placing obstructions and conducting sit-in protests in the middle of the road.
The blockade began following the meeting held on April 17 in which the Meira Paibis announced that if the state authorities failed to provide assurance for the construction of the road by April 27 strong agitations will ensue from April 28 onwards.
A Meira Paibi leader at the road blockade at Top Chingtha Pishakmacha said that the Azad Golai to Nongpok Keithelmanbi road has been in a deteriorated condition for years, causing various health issues to the people in the surrounding region.
The locals have appealed to the local MLA, state chief minister and the authorities concerned regarding the issue but in vain, she mentioned.
If the authorities continued to ignore the demands, the locals will intensify the agitations, including digging up roads, she added.
