In wake of the state government's failure to maintain a pucca road along the Imphal-Kongba Road, irate locals have launched an indefinite road block strike along the Imphal-Yairipok road from Tuesday morning.

The local residing along the stretch of Imphal-Yairipok Road from Kongba Bazar to Keirao Bitra Khunou, under the aegis of the All Kongba Road United Clubs Organisation (AKRUCO), came out on the streets and blocked the road with obstacles and by ways of burning tyres.

As a consequence, normal commuters faced a lot of inconveniences. However, medical emergency, essential services and other religious functions were exempted from the road block.

Meanwhile, shops and establishments along the road stretch, including the Kongba Market remained shuttered down, showing support and solidarity to the agitation.

Soon after getting the information about the roadblock, a team of Imphal East police personnel came and dispersed the agitators and also removed the obstacles from the road. Fortunately, there were no reports of confrontation with the agitators and the police.

However, after police left the spot, the band supporters restarted blocking the road.

Speaking to the media, convenor of AKRUCO, Lenin Hirom, said that it is not a hot news to the state government that the Imphal-Kongba road is in a very deplorable condition.

He said, due to the bad road condition many had lost their precious lives while many had sustained injuries due to frequent accidents along this road stretch.

The convenor drew the attention of the competence authority and the state government to black top the road at the earliest. Remaining a silent spectator to their demand will compel them to intensify the agitation, he cautioned.
