The chief of D Lhangjol village in Churachandpur district was arrested and poppy cultivation found in the hill range of the village was destroyed by a team led by the district DC on Thursday.
The total poppy cultivated land is estimated to be about 15 acres and poppy plants worth Rs 90 lakh were destroyed. As many as 10 matured stems of poppy with pods and about 40 kg of fertilizers were seized from the spot.
Churachandpur police sources said they received specific information regarding large-scale illegal cultivation of poppy in the hill range of D Lhangjol village areas and carried out operation with the knowledge and permission of D Lhangjol village chief Letkholal Khongsai.
A suo motu case under FIR NO.197(12)2022 CCP-PS u/s 18(b)/25/27-A/29 ND & PS Act has been registered for investigation, following which the chief of D Lhangjol village Letkholal Khongsai was arrested from Tuibuong area at 4.50 pm, police said.
