The Manipur police on Thursday refuted the allegation levelled against them by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on the death of MPYC president N Popilal’s grandmother.
A release issued by the Imphal West SP Ksh Shivakanta categorically stated that the death of the elderly woman is in no way connected with the act of police, clarifying to the report filed by a local daily on its Thursday edition with the headline “MPCC alleges police atrocity in Popilal grandmother's death.”
It stated that a police team visited the residence of Popilal at Phayeng based on an FIR lodged against him. However, the police left the spot as he was not found at his place, it added.
All formal procedures were strictly followed as laid down in CrPC and the question of police brutality as alleged is totally out of the picture, the release clarified.
In so far as the involvement of Popilal is concerned, it is still an ongoing investigation, it stated, adding, his guilt or innocence will be established only once the investigation is completed.
“The police were performing its assigned duty, as such; it is to reiterate that the death of the elderly lady is in no way connected with the act of the police. The linking of an investigation of a police case and the death of Popilal's grandmother is incorrect, uncalled for and unfortunate,” it added.
