Arongkhong Farmers’ Welfare Association (AFWA) on Thursday appealed to the authorities concerned for reviving the Arongkhong canal to provide irrigation to the paddy fields located at the north of Arongkhong Kakching Khunou in Kakching district.

In a release, AFWA stated that the association had been demanding the authorities concerned for revival of the Arongkhong canal. It recalled that the Arongkhong canal had been supplying irrigation water to the paddy fields at the north of Arongkhong Kakching Khunou for the past many years. But the canal was buried with earth for the construction of a bazaar at Kakching Khunou Lamkhai and the canal passage was deviated, it added. “The paddy fields which are parched may not yield any harvest for the year,” it stated.

Although the association had been requesting the SDC Waikhong, SDO Waikhong and DC Kakching to revive the Arongkhong canal, the authorities had not provided any response, it condemned. It informed that the farmers had also filed a case at the Manipur High Court. Then the High Court on August 31 issued an order to revive the Arongkhong canal within a month, it added.

It further stated that the farmers demanding for the revival of Arongkhong canal have no affiliation with any political party, and also appealed to the concerned not to politicise the issue.
