Alleging police atrocity in the death of grandmother of Manipur Congress Youth president N Popilal, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday demanded the state government’s decision on the steps to be taken to address the matter.
The grandmother of Popilal was in coma on February 9 when the police reportedly stormed the residence of Popilal in Phayeng, Imphal West at night in a war footing manner in connection with the attack on BJP spokesperson M Sureshkumar, and BJYM executive N Alex, as alleged by the Congress party.

Popilal’s grandmother succumbed to her illness on Thursday night.
The FIR lodged against Popilal is baseless as a CCTV footage clearly shows that he was taking a class during the period of the commission of the crime against Sureshkumar and Alex, said MPCC president K Meghachandra.
He was speaking to the media during the visit at Popilal’s residence to console the death of Popilal’s grandmother.
Meghachandra said even the concerned SDPO himself has clarified through the phone that Popilal was not involved in the case.
Stating that the CCTV footage proved that Popilal was innocent, he demanded withdrawal of FIR against the youth leader and sought a clarification on the police atrocity at his residence.

“The police atrocity which treats Popilal as an anti-national and a terrorist has led to the death of his grandmother who raised him up as a mother. It is an uncivilised act,” said CLP leader Ibobi.
The death might not take place if police had apprised formally and officially for any inquiry against Popilal, he added.
As Popilal is innocent, the Congress party will fully back Popilal, he said, adding, “Congres is not afraid of anyone as they had not done any wrong”.
