Maheshwar Thounaojam on Sunday announced his candidacy in the upcoming 18th Lok Sabha elections in Manipur.
He will be contesting in the Inner Lok Sabha constituency as RPI (Athawale) candidate.
Speaking to media on the sidelines of a public meeting held at his residence in Keishampat, Maheshwar maintained that the urgent need to protect Manipur and it's people was the main motive behind his candidacy in the elections.
"The high commands of RPI (A) has not intruded in any of my decisions till now but if they try to restrict my freedom, I will leave the party," he said.

He highlighted that winning the elections was not his only objective but that there were far more important matters which needed to be addressed.
"Rectifying the rotten system and all the issues which has been plaguing the people without any hindrance is my primary goal," he said.
He stated that he had been striving for the people of Manipur by asserting his political freedom and keeping party alliance at the centre aside.
He also called upon the people to make the upcoming elections free and fair without any political prejudice.
Attendees also shared their thoughts on Maheshwar's candidacy and announced their support in the upcoming elections.
