Extortion Case: One in custody, two released on bail

The accused were involved in extortion from schools and government offices of all departments of Jiribam district

The Special Judge (NIA), Imphal East on Wednesday remanded a militant in 15-day judicial custody till October 5 in connection with a case of carrying out extortion from schools and government offices of all departments of Jiribam district.

Two other co-accused persons who were arrested in connection with the case were released on bail by furnishing a PR bond Rs 50,000.

The court remanded one Thingom Lenish Singh, aged around 44 years, son of Th Bijoykumar Singh from Singjamei Makha Irom Leikai, Imphal West, presently staying at Babupara Ward No V of Jiribam district Police station in 15-day judicial custody.

The other co-accused, one Yumkhaibam Binoy alias Chaoba Meitei, aged about 52 years, son of (L) Y Bira Meitei of Sekta Makha Leikai, Imphal East, presently residing at Kalinagar Ward No II, Jiribam district police station and Khaidem Apabi Singh, aged about 41 years, son of (L) Kh Iboyai Singh of Sekta Makha Leikai, Imphal East were released on bail.

They were released as there were no sufficient materials to prima facie presume that they took part in the commission of the alleged offences, the court stated.

Allegation levelled against the accused persons is that the accused are members of a terrorist organisation, and they were involved in extortion from schools and government offices of all departments of Jiribam district, and some material evidences were also seized from the possessions of the accused persons.

Meanwhile, three separate bail applications were filed by the accused persons through their counsels praying for releasing them on bail.

The court rejected the bail application of Th Lenish as no sufficient material to grant bail to the accused were found while considering bail application and the police report.
