Rape Case: Two militants remanded in judicial custody

Accused of raping a minor girl, two active cadres of a proscribed militant outfit have been remanded in 15-day judicial custody till October 5.

The Special Judge (POCSO), Imphal East on Wednesday remanded two active cadres of a proscribed militant outfit to 15-day judicial custody till October 5 in connection with a rape case.

The two militants, who were apprehended by a team of Imphal East district commando on September 12 from Takhel village, Imphal East, were formally arrested by Women police station, Imphal East on Tuesday in connection with the FIR case registered under POCSO Act, 2012.

The arrested persons were identified as one Leishangthem Khomei Singh, 53 years, of Haraorok Mayai Leikai, Imphal East district and one Khangembam Sanjoy Singh @ Athoi @ Pambei, 28 years, of Kumbi Setapur Maning Leikai, Bishnupur district.

Leishangthem Khomei Singh was produced before the court from the police custody while Khangembam Sanjoy Singh @ Athoi @ Pambei was produced before via VC as he is now admitted at JNIMS Hospital due to some ailments.

Produced before the court, the IO prayed for judicial custody remand of the accused persons till October 5.

In the allegation levelled against the accused persons, in brief, the complainant reported to the OC, WPS-IE that the accused Khangembam Sanjoy Singh @ Athoi @ Pambei had committed penetrative sexual assault on the minor victim girl on September 12, 2022 at the hillside of Takhel.

On further examination of the victim girl, it came to light that the accused L Khomei also raped her.

After hearing the submission of counsels and on perusal of the materials on record, at the present stage, the court expressed satisfaction that the accusation levelled against the accused persons are well founded and thus, both the accused persons are remanded into judicial custody for fifteen days.

While the accused were being produced before the court, a group of women, identifying themselves as families of the rape victim and localities stormed the Cheirap Court, protesting and displaying placards that said: "Sanjoy and Khomei are rapists, they should not be released on bail".
