An advisor and convenor of the Advisory Committee, AMSU headquarters, who was arrested by the team of Imphal West Commando from Khurai Kongpal in Imphal East at around 4:50 am Saturday, has been found to be an active cadre of a valley-based proscribed outfit.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Clay Khongsai told media at the conference hall of Superintendent of Police, Imphal West on Sunday that acting on an information of the presence of some active cadres of a valley-based proscribed underground outfit at Khurai Kongpal area, a team of Imphal West commando conducted operation in the said area at around 4:50 am on Saturday.

During the operation, one person was detained who identified as Thokchom Suresh alias Tombi alias Parihanba, 39, son of Th Kumar Singh of Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai. One 0.38 pistol along with one magazine was seized from the possession of Suresh, he added.

As per disclosure from Suresh, he joined the outfit in 1997 and got his basic military training at Eastern Nagaland and was allotted MPA number 607 of 13th batch. He is presently working under the command of one major Umakanta of the same outfit from Singjamei who is presently staying at Myanmar since 2021, Clay said.

Suresh disclosed that he is presently working as advisor of AMSU (a students’ body) and as convenor of advisory committee of AMSU (HQ). One laptop was also seized from his possession which was handed over to him by his commander through an unknown person at Moreh when he went to attend AMSU Foundation Day on August 28 at Eastern Shine School, Moreh.

Suresh was arrested and handed over to Porompat police station along with the seizures for further investigation, said the senior police officer.

Clay said involvement of underground outfit in student organisations should be avoided as it could defame a student organisation.

“If you are part of a student organisation, do not be involved with anti-national elements or insurgents,” Clay said.

Thorough investigation will be conducted and if necessary, the case will be handed over to central agency, he added.
