Manipur Transport Minister Khashim Vashum has said that a total of 3,519 cases have been registered against vehicle theft and 243 vehicle lifters have been arrested till July 25 in the last five years.
Vashum was responding to a starred question from Opposition MLA Surjakumar Okram in the second session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on Friday.
The Transport minister said that among the registered vehicle theft cases, 2,996 cases are for two-wheelers; 49 cases are for three-wheelers; 441 cases for four-wheelers and 33 cases for heavy vehicles (trucks, excavators and trailers).
A total of 284 stolen vehicles have been recovered in the last five years till July 25, he mentioned.
He said, during the period, a total of 243 vehicle lifters have been arrested; 94 have been convicted; one case is under trial; seven cases are pending and three cases have been charge-sheeted.
Supplementing the answer against the starred question, leader of the House N Biren Singh said to monitor vehicle lifters CCTV surveillance has been increased and monitoring of suspicious vehicles are still continuing at Common Command Centres.
He said that a separate team has been engaged to handle the vehicle lifting cases. The government has been taking various steps as precautionary measures in connection with the vehicle lifting cases, he said.
Recently, officials have started seizing vehicles that do not have registration plates at Moreh town; however, those seized vehicles were released after proper documents were produced, said Biren.
