20 persons identified in Churachandpur arson, FIR against Paolienlal Haokip

Opposition MLA Meghachandra drew attention of the home minister N Biren Singh, and raised the calling attention motion on account of the arson incident which took place recently at Churachandpur following the suspension of a police head constable posted in the district.

Leader of the House, N Biren Singh on Friday said the eight different FIRs have been registered, of which two have been handed over to the CBI for probe into the arson of Churachandpur DC and SP offices, while 20 individuals have been identified in connection with the incident.

CM Biren who is also home minister in-charge informed the House, responding to the calling attention raised by Opposition MLA K Meghachandra Singh during 5th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Responding to the calling attention, home minister N Biren Singh informed the House that the incident was unfortunate. The head constable, Siamlalpaul was suspended by the district SP based on a video surfaced on social media which showed the head constable along with some Kuki militants.

Following the incident, a large mob vandalised the office of SP and DC office, and was later torched. He said that two rooms occupied by SDC and SDO were burned down during the incident. DC residence was burnt down during the incident, he added.

Before the incident took place, MLA Paolienlal Haokip around 8.30 pm of the same day, posted a comment on ‘X’, he said.  One FIR has been registered against him in connection with the post as the arson might be related to it, CM Biren aaid.

To control the mob, police took necessary action starting from a warning. Among the mob, some armed militants were found involved and started firing towards the security forces in which six state forces and one Assam rifles jawans sustained injuries. A total of 43 civilians were injured and two died as a result of the retaliation and the measures to control the mob

He further informed that the government has video proof of involvement of Kuki militants using AK assault rifles, and 20 individuals have been identified in connection with the incident. As the involvement of militants is suspected, two cases of the eight have been handed over to CBI. Besides, the leader of the house said that all the data of DC and SP offices are safe in digital format, while the state has converted 80 per cent of all official data in digital format for the entire state.
