In the wake of escalating unrest in Churachandpur, Manipur, the state government has taken immediate action to address the situation, issuing suspensions to seven officers from Imphal and one officer from Churachandpur based on preliminary evidence. The move comes as the government acknowledges lapses in the conduct of various officials, with a commitment to ensuring accountability.

The turmoil unfolded on February 15, 2024, when a mob of 800 to 1,000 people, fueled by rumors spread by anti-social elements, ransacked and set ablaze the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) and Superintendent of Police's (SP) offices in Churachandpur. Disturbingly, the mob also targeted 12 trucks and buses parked in the office complex, two of which were carrying relief material destined for camps in the district. The official residence of the DC was also torched, and reports indicate the National Flag was disrespected during the incident. Tragically, two lives were lost, and one security force personnel sustained injuries.

In the aftermath, the 'Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), claiming to represent the apex body of all Tribal Leaders of Kuki-Zo Community, issued several press releases and notices, including direct threats against the DC and SP of Churachandpur. The forum went as far as giving an ultimatum for the officials to leave the district and close government offices.

The State Government, through the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of districts, has been actively engaged in welfare efforts for displaced persons since May 3, 2023. Despite challenging conditions, officials have worked tirelessly to ensure the well-being of those affected, with support from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

However, reports from Churachandpur suggest accusations of delayed relief material disbursement post the February 15 incident. The Deputy Commissioner clarified that the last release of relief materials, including 50,000 kgs of rice, 245 bags of dal, and other consumables, occurred on February 12/13, 2024.

The unfortunate incident also resulted in the destruction of the DC's office, including the Relief In-charge's office, and the official residence. Personal threats issued to the DC and SP have caused considerable mental distress not only to the officers directly involved but to the entire team dedicated to relief efforts in the state.

The state government has initiated the process of reconstructing damaged or lost documents and remains committed to ensuring timely relief for all affected individuals. An appeal has been made to the public to support the District Administration's efforts to aid displaced persons as the state works towards restoration and peace.
