Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been tested positive for COVID-19, according to local media.

Following the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished his Japanese counterpart speedy recovery.

"Wishing my friend Prime Minister Fumio Kishida a speedy recovery from COVID-19," PM Modi said in a Twitter post.

A report in Kyodo News, quoting the premier's office, said that Fumio Kishida tested positive for coronavirus Sunday, but his symptoms are mild.

Japan today has more than 1.7 crore COVID-19 confirmed cases, while the death toll rose to 1.7 crore. The country reported 2,53,192 new positive cases in a span of 24 hours on August 20.
