Thousands of birds killed in hailstorm: PFA Manipur

People for Animals (PFA), Manipur expressed concern over the impending climate change crisis in the state and urged all to set aside all differences and take necessary measures to fight the climate crisis.

People for Animals (PFA), Manipur on Wednesday claimed that thousands of birds were killed due to the recent heavy rains accompanied by hailstorm which ravaged Manipur on Sunday.

The violent hailstorm not only destroyed several properties but caused damage to many wildlife and birds, stated PFA in a release. The same occurred during the bird breeding season, as such thousands of birds were killed, it stated. Mortality was especially high among spotted doves locally known as ‘Lam Khunu’, it mentioned.

It further acknowledged the care offered to the injured birds by the people adding that pictures of the same surfaced on social media. Many injured birds were also handed over to PFA, it stated, adding that they are undergoing treatment at animal shelters. It further mentioned reports that Sangai and other wildlife at Keibul Lamjao National Park were unharmed by the hailstorm.

It highlighted the consequences of deforestation asserting that it affects the rainfall. It expressed concern over the impending climate change crisis in the state and urged all to set aside all differences and take necessary measures to fight the climate crisis.
