Save Thoubal River: Committee to Manipur government

The government action called for to save the Thoubal River “which is the lifeline of the people of Andro, Heirok, Wangkhem, Thoubal and Wabagai”.

Thoubal River in Manipur is the lifeline of the people of Andro, Heirok, Wangkhem, Thoubal and Wabagai. Taking serious note of its deteriorating condition, the Thoubal River Conservation Committee has drawn the attention of the authorities concerned to save the river.

The river committee stated in a release that it has been staging several demonstration in an effort towards restoration of the Thoubal River for the past five years.

The committee had also conducted a statewide general strike and countless memorandums had been given to the ministers concerned. As a part of the movement, a PIL was submitted to the Manipur High Court on January 24 of 2019, followed by interim orders for the conservation of the Thoubal River, it continued.

“The interim order has prohibited sand mining and stone quarry in Thoubal River and the Director General of Police (DGP) had issued an order on July 7, 2022 to authorise a team led by an ASI to monitor mining activities at their respective jurisdictions,” it read.

It questioned if the security personnel and authorities concerned are carrying out their respective duties honestly. 

It highlighted the important role played by the Thoubal River in sustaining its surrounding ecology and drew the attention of Chief Minister N Biren to take up immediate action for the conservation of the river.
