The state also observed the 26th International Day of 'Action for River' themed ‘Rights of River’ with the observation organised by Rural Women Upliftment Society and Highland at Tuitha Riverside, Lajangphai Village, Churachandpur on Tuesday.
The event was attended by the Environment and Climate Change, joint director Braja Kumar, EO (town) Thangmoi Baite, Saikot MLA PA Kamboi Haokip along with a team from Vision Lamka, leader of CSOs of Churachandpur and chiefs of villages along the Tuitha River.
At the event, the ‘Lawm Lawm’ campaign of the highland led by its director Dennis Lallienzual was also launched with the objective to transform and restore rivers by large-scale plantation of water-bearing trees.
RWUS secretary Mary Beth on the occasion delivered a keynote address and stressed on the topic 'Rivers for life and the community’. She recalled her childhood days when the Tuitha River was much cleaner as compared to the current state which had deteriorated by pollution.
Speaking on the importance of the 'Action for Rivers' initiative, David Buhril said that the degradation and drying up of rivers is witnessed everywhere in the world and it has to be tackled through mass movement involving different stakeholders.
