North East (NE) Olympic Organisation Committee and North East Olympic Association on Wednesday announced that the North East Olympic Games to be held in Meghalaya from October 30 till November 6 will include 18 sports.
North East Olympic Organisation Committee and North East Olympic Association made the announcement during the first coordination meeting held at the Main Secretariat at Shillong in Meghalaya. The coordination meeting was attended by representatives of the respective Olympic Associations of the eight states of Northeast India.
North East Olympic Association, Manipur Olympic Association president and Heirok assembly constituency MLA Thokchom Radheshyam said that the NE Olympic Games of the year will be a special occasion as it will be combined with the Golden Jubilee statehood day celebration of the host state Meghalaya.
He informed that the 18 sports to be included in the NE Olympic Games are archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, football, judo, karate, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, wushu, cycling, golf, weightlifting and wrestling.
Thokchom Radheshyam also mentioned that the meeting had concluded to invite the sportsperson from the North East India who were the medalists in the recent Tokyo Olympic and Commonwealth Games, as the special invitees.
Speaking on the occasion, Meghalaya State Olympic Association working president and minister of Sports and Youth Affairs of Meghalaya Banteidor Lyngdoh said that the 18 sports included in the upcoming NE Olympic Games were selected by consulting with the Meghalaya State Olympics Association and by considering the infrastructure of Meghalaya as well.
