Gold medallist Linthoi Chanambam gets hero's welcome as she returns home

Hundreds thronged the Imphal International Airport and adorned her with garlands and congratulate her as Judoka Linthoi Chanambam arrived in Imphal.

Linthoi Chanambam landed in Imphal on Tuesday after lifting Manipur's pride and scripting history by becoming the first-ever Indian to win a gold at the Cadet World Championships 2022 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, across any age and gender.

Hundreds thronged the Imphal International Airport and adorned her with garlands to congratulate her on achieving the feat. The 16-year-old from Mayang Imphal in Imphal West was accorded a hero's welcome by family members, locals and her fans who gathered at the airport. 

Traditional music group played drums and 'Pena' as she was escorted from the exit of the airport.

During an interaction with the media, Linthoi said that she planned on staying in Imphal for just two weeks as a recovery and rest session during which she will meet friends and relatives.

 An elated Linthoi further expressed gratitude to the people for welcoming her in a grand manner.

She further said that she will be consulting her coach for further training and upcoming championships after her stay in Imphal. 

When asked about her secret 'mantra', she hinted that it should be hard work and dedication and said that they always pay off. 

Interestingly, she drew her inspiration from Kosovo's first Olympic champion in Judo, Majlinda Kelmendi, who has now retired. 

While her younger sister also clinched a gold medal at the recently concluded 1st Khelo India Women's Judo Tournament in Guwahati, Linthoi, with a hint of pride for her younger sister, expressed firm belief that she will also be able to achieve something big in life. 

Thanga assembly constituency MLA  T Robindro, coaches among others also joined in welcoming the ace Judoka.

Meanwhile, head coach for Judo of Mayai Lambi Sports Academy A Surjit Meitei, who had trained Linthoi, said that he always saw something in her. 

"We at Mayai Lambi Sports Academy which is located near Linthoi's residence insisted that she has the right potential to play Judo," he said. 

He also expressed firm belief that Linthoi will one day stand tall on the Olympic podium.
