The Manipur Chess Association has sought the intervention of Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam in identifying the bonafide entity of the Chess apex body in the state, Manipur Chess Association member A Muhindro Sharma said.

He was speaking at the Manipur Press Club on Monday. Former president MCA Th Nabachandra and general secretary S Dhanchandra were present during the briefing.

Muhindro Sharma said that they have come across a chess body calling itself as Manipur Chess Development Association through a local daily that had announced a selection tournament for players will be held June 19-22. “Although we had verified in the media that there is no such body and had no authority to hold the tournament, they have gone ahead with the tournament,” he said.

He further said, the matter was reported to the police and a complaint was filed. The police authority has called representatives of both bodies to chalk out the matter. During cross check, the so-called Manipur Chess Development Association had produced their registration certificate having number 1520 of 2007. “But we have checked the same with the Registrar of Societies, Manipur and they have replied in negative that no such registration number is there,” he added.

However, it was later found out that the Manipur Chess Development Association had done their registration at the Sub-Registrar Office at Imphal East, he continued. It further came to light that the Sub-Registrar Office deals in land, paddy field and marriage affairs but not sports matters, he added.

The Sub Registrar Office of Imphal East had acknowledged the fact of registration but on what grounds they had performed such a task, the MCA questioned. Furthermore, the Manipur Chess Association pointed out that the matter should be thoroughly examined and cleared at the earliest and prayed for the intervention of the state government, particularly the Sports Minister in settling the matter.

Meanwhile, the All India Chess Federation while invoking its power under Section 24(a) of its Constitution and bye laws of the AICF had reportedly expelled and disaffiliated the Manipur Chess Association in August 2016 and had constituted an ad hoc committee under Section 24(b) with L Atembi as chairman to run the affairs of Chess in Manipur in the interests of players.
