Manipur opened its medal tally with a gold in weightlifting in the Goa National Games on Wednesday.
People of Manipur celebrated the opening of its medal haul and breaking of the national record in the snatch by Phamdom Ranibala, who lifted 90 kg in the 55 kg category of women's weightlifting at the 37th National Games being held at Goa.
The earlier record was held by Mirabai Chanu with a lift of 86 kg on March 29, 2023. While overcoming 90 kg and creating a new national record, Ranibala successfully lifted 106 kg in the clean and jerk and a total of 196 kg on her way to the gold medal.
Shrabani Das of West Bengal won the Silver while Sneha Soren won the Bronze.
Manipur sports officials said gymnasts from Manipur secured berths in finals of Aerobic Individual and Mixed Pair at the National Games at Goa's Peddem Sports Complex.
Scoring an impressive 17.80, Ariha Pangambam in the Aerobics Individual comfortably earned her berth in the final while the Mixed Pair of Chabungbam Leishilembi and Okram Umajit bravely fought with a score of 14.95 to enter into the list of finalists scheduled for 27th October.
Expressing satisfaction and praising the performances of the young gymnasts, Yanglem Bony, Coach of the Team said that the final of the gymnastics on October 27 will be very competitive.
"Our gymnasts are determined and spirited. I am hopeful that the gymnasts from Manipur will perform at their best to add to the medal tally," Coach Bony said.
Altogether 560 individuals including 406 players (180 males and 226 females), 76 coaches, 56 team managers and 22 MOA officials and others, are representing Manipur in the upcoming 37th Goa National Games, 2023.
The games will be held from 25th October 25 to November 9, 2023. Out of 48 disciplines for which athletes are competing in the upcoming National Games, athletes from Manipur state are participating in 26 disciplines.
Manipur clinched a total of 50 medals including 20 golds, 10 silvers and 20 bronze in 21 sports disciplines to secure the 9th place in the 36th National Games held in Gujarat.
