The Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) party on Thursday dissolved its Nagaland state committee, stating that Nagaland state president of the party, Senchumo NSN Lotha, has issued a letter of support to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio without consulting the central leadership.

Calling the move of extending support to the newly formed NDPP-BJP-led government by its Nagaland unit as “high indiscipline and arbitrary”, JD-U wrote, “The party has dissolved its Nagaland state committee with immediate effect.”

According to a statement issued by the JD-U’s national general secretary, Afaque Ahmad Khan, "The central party comes to know that the Nagaland state president of our party (has) given a letter of support to the Chief Minister of Nagaland without consulting the central party, (which) is high indiscipline and arbitrary. So, the party has dissolved the Nagaland state committee with immediate effect."

In the recently held Nagaland Assembly elections 2023, the JD-U had bagged only one seat in the 60-member Assembly while the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) bagged 25 seats and its alliance party BJP won 12 seats, to retain power for the second term.

Neiphiu Rio was sworn in as the chief minister of Nagaland for the record fifth time on March 7, becoming the longest serving chief minister of the state.
