Nipon Goswami, Assamese actor and theatre artiste passed away in a hospital in Guwahati, Assam on Thursday. The veteran passed away at 9.15 am after battling with prolonged illness. He was 75.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep grief over the demise of the actor.
"Saddened by the passing away of Shri Nipon Goswami, who made a pioneering contribution to the Assamese film industry. His diverse works will be remembered by several film lovers. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti," the prime minister tweeted.
According to reports, the actor suffered prolonged illness and was treated at a private hospital in Guwahati. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law.
Former Assam chief minister and present Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal also condoled the deathof the actor.
"The polestar of Assamese cinema is no more. Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of veteran actor Nipon Goswami. A star since the 1960s, Nipon da had captivated the hearts of audience and his death brings an end to a golden era," Sonowal said in a tweet.
