A human right activist has lodged a complaint with the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) in connection with the ban on actress Soma Laishram for three years from film activities by the Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL).

According to the human rights activist, on September 16, 2023, Soma Laishram participated in a beauty pageant under the theme “The North East Festival” organised by My Home India at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi.

Following her appearance in the event, the KKL stated that Soma Laishram participating in such festivals compounds to exhibiting Manipur a normal state amid the ongoing crisis. She participated in full defiance of all such requests and in total disrespect to the Meiteis who have died so far and are continuing to die and disregard of the thousands of people rendered homeless and over thousand houses burned and the existence of Manipur as a nation state with over 2000 years of history stands at its most crucial hour, the Lup said, adding that such cardinal crime of Soma Laishram participating cannot be pardoned.

The KKL claims to be a civil society organisation and one self-style secretary general of the said KKL, identified to be Luwangcha U Ngamkeingakpa, issued a press statement banning Soma Laishram for three years from film activities, the activist said in the complaint.

The excerpt of the press statement is reproduced as under: “Soma Laishram barred from acting in films and Social Functions for three years, on September 18”, the activist added.

With regards to the press statement by KKL, the activist stated that the Lup even threatened others stating that ‘if any individual or groups should defy this directive and involve Soma Laishram in their ventures then the consequences of their act should be their own’.

The human rights activist stated that KKL has no authority to impose any ban on the actress and banning the actress from her activities, including working with any film industry, is in violation of human rights.

The acts of KKL not only violates freedom of thought and conscience of the actress, but also violates the right to freedom of expression and livelihood of the actress, the activist said.

The complainant submitted that the press statement issued by KKL shall not come under the ambit of freedom of expression.
