Drugs seized in Meghalaya

Heroin weighing 3.99 kg smuggled through the Indo-Myanmar border from along NH-44 at Mawryngkneng, in the suburbs of the Meghalaya capital Shillong was seized late Thursday.

Sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) successfully intercepted and seized 3.99 kg of heroin smuggled through the Indo-Myanmar border from along NH-44 at Mawryngkneng, in the suburbs of the Meghalaya capital Shillong late Thursday. One person of interest has been arrested under various provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985.

A communique issued by the Shillong Station Head of DRI on Friday informed that on Thursday, based on credible intel, officers of DRI Shillong, intercepted an SUV vehicle in which the person of interest was travelling at Mawryngkneng.

“Rummaging of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of 307 soap cases weighing 3.99 kgs of pinkish powder wrapped in polythene sachets from the possession of the suspect. The soap cases were concealed inside a secret chamber below the seat of the SUV,” read the communique adding, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment had come from Manipur via Mizoram. The value of the heroin seized in the international illicit market is estimated at Rs. 27.94 crore.”

Follow up action and searches were initiated and activated immediately, and further investigation is in progress, the statement read.
