Zeme Naga Council Manipur (ZNCM) president Apung Daime on Saturday appealed to the authorities concerned for immediate restoration and repair of the existing roads in Tousem area to provide the basic amenities of life.

He said that the road serving as a lifeline in the Tousem area has been in a deplorable condition, and the failure to provide an all-weather approach road at Tousem subdivision has been a serious issue for the people living in the area for several decades.

Heavy rainfall in Tamenglong district of Manipur on an unprecedented scale this year has worsened the situation, throwing the life and activities of the people out of gear, he added.

The inter-connectivity road connecting the villages to Tamenglong district headquarters and the life- line road to Kaiphundai on NH 37 have become completely non-functioning and non-motorable, he mentioned.

He said that incessant rainfalls in the last months have damaged all the roads connecting to Tousem Sub divisional Headquarters. The roads are in deplorable condition with potholes, ditches, rocks, mud, etc. due to which all movement of people and traffic has come to a halt, he added.

He said that on the stretch of Tousem to Kaiphundai every time when it rains, rain water turns the road into muddy pools, due to which plying of small local vehicles has become impossible. The residents of villages in the Tousem hill range are suffering the most, including essential commodities for basic day-to-day livelihood, he added.

He also mentioned that the NHIDCL road construction project connecting Tamenglong to Tousem (NH 137) has also been stopped since the last five months due to non-accessibility to the project sites.

Therefore, the Zeme Naga Council, Manipur (ZNCM) representing the local people of the area fervently and earnestly appealed to the authorities concerned including district administration, NHIDCL or contractors concerned for immediate restoration and repair the existing roads which connect villages to the nearest pucca road to provide basic amenities of life.
