Joining the rest of the World, Centre For Development Activities Wangjing, Khangembam Tomba Memorial Trust, Thoubal Athokpam along with Shine Pharma Imphal observed World Schizophrenia Day at CDAC Complex, Wangjing Thoubal district on Friday.
The event held on theme ‘Celebrating the Power of Community Kindness’’ witnessed the presence of CMO Thoubal Dr Y Nokul Singh; founder principal IRE Group of Institutions, Wangjing, Narengbam Rajivkumar; DSWO Thoubal Kangujam Nongpoknganba Singh and former vice chairperson, Wangjing- Lamding Municipal Council, Narengbam Binoy singh among others.
Speaking at the programme, founder, CDAC Wangjing, M Shushilkumar Singh highlighted the significance of observing the day. He said that it aims to foster empathy and extend support to the individuals with schizophrenia, promote early intervention and treatment as well as enhance awareness among the public and policy makers.
Resource person at the event, senior psychiatrist, District Hospital Chandel, Dr Kh Robindro, noted that patients with mental illness and their family are highly stigmatized in this world of internet. He urged every community member to contribute their best to ensure treatment and rehabilitation of those suffering from schizophrenia in our locality.
Dr Y Nokul, in his speech, asserted that the observance of World Schizophrenia Day is an important activity of the health services. District Health Society Thoubal was not able to observe the event this year, however, plans will be made to observe the day at district level from next year, he added.
Speaking on the sidelines, Narengbam Rajivkumar appealed to families who have schizophrenia patients to take medical facilities available on time to enable recovery from the illness. He further stressed the need to provide encouragement, love and affection to the patients during their treatment. Six women leaders from Wangjing area were also felicitated during the event, in acknowledgement of their roles during the present crisis.
