A rare monitor lizard was rescued and released at its habitat area at Taothong khunou, Imphal West on Friday. Interestingly, the event coincided with ‘World Ranger Day which is being celebrated on July 31 every year.
Sources said that some animal lovers from Taothong Khunou, Imphal West under Lamsang Police station informed the Joint Co-ordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity (JCCWB) that they had rescued a living Monitor Lizard and kept it in their custody.
Upon receiving the information, a team of JCCWB along with forest staff rushed to the said spot and took over the custody of the animal. Later, the team released the animal at Lamdeng nursery site around 6.30 pm, a member from JCCWB added.
JCCWB also acknowledged and expressed gratitude for the help rendered by Ksh Bishwarup, Ksh Maston, Ksh Nicholas and Ch Bobby on saving the poor animal. It is with their timely help that the animal was rescued, JCCWB added.
The team also appealed to the general public to inform the forest department or any other animal related organisations of the state whenever stranded animals or animals are found. This can help in saving the lives of the rare and precious wildlife animals and birds.
The JCCWB has been conducting a series of awareness programmes on the conservation and preservation of wildlife animals and birds from time to time, the member said.
