In a resolute display of dissatisfaction with the perceived inaction of both state and central government, womenfolk of Thangmeiband and Lamphal area on Sunday staged a sit-in protest at Thangmeiband, Imphal West.
Organised under the banner of the Khwai Lamphel Women’s Development Organisation (KLWDO), the protest was a fervent demand for justice following the alleged gangrape incident that has sent shockwaves through the region.
The protestors also vociferously called for the swift apprehension and exemplary punishment of the individuals implicated in the alleged gangrape.
Speaking to the media, a protestor expressed profound dismay at the seeming disparity in the government’s response.
The protestor lamented the silence of both the state and central government over the gangrape case, while both the government reacted instantly in a naked parade case of two women.
Such biases of the government seems that the dignity of women in the valley is being undervalued, she said, stressing the importance of acknowledging the intrinsic worth of a Meitei woman.
“Dignity of a Meitei woman is more precious than her life itself,” she added.
The agitation didn’t stop at condemning the alleged gangrape and government indifference.
The demonstrators vehemently raised their voices against reported instances of alleged mistreatment by the Assam Rifles towards women from the region.
They further demanded for the withdrawal of the Assam Rifles from Manipur and the eradication of the perceived menace posed by Chin-Kuki Narco-Terrorists was also issued.
Amid these impassioned pleas for justice, the protestors also expressed a fervent desire for the restoration of peace in Manipur which has been absent in the region for over three months.
