Woman found dead on her bed

Deceased family members alleged a woman was beaten to dead by her brother-in-law.

Two people were arrested after a 45-year-old woman was allegedly found dead on her bed at her house in Thoubal district, Manipur on Monday morning, police said.

According to the maternal family of the deceased, she was allegedly beaten to death by her brother-in-law.  The deceased husband and the accused have been arrested by Thoubal Police station for investigation, the police said.

The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Saikhom Ongbi Shanti Devi, wife of Shaikhom Kumar from Khangabok Part-III Lamlong Makha Leikai Sanglen Leirak under the jurisdiction of Thoubal police station. She was found dead on her bed by her son.

The deceased husband is an LIC agent and has been away from home for the last two months. She is survived by her three children.

The accused is a 50-year-old Shaikhom Binoi son of late Iboshangba.

A press meet was held at Shanti’s maternal locality in Khangabok Part-II Mayai Leikai  regarding the incident on Monday afternoon.

Speaking to the media, one Khundrakpam Sunil, cousin brother of the deceased said that upon investigation they found out that accused Binoi and Shanti got into a fight and he physically assaulted the deceased on Sunday afternoon, he alleged.  Sunil also expressed suspicion about the husband regarding the case.

Sunil implicated Binoi in killing Shanti due to extreme physical assault. He added that they will not initiate any form of protest or mob justice and will also not form a JAC, instead, he urged the government to award befitting punishment to the culprits and warned the concerned authorities of intense agitations if their demands were not fulfilled at the earliest.
