WMC to stage protest at Guwahati on May 19

Demanding Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to send the two required reports for inclusion of Meetei in the ST list to the Centre without further delay, World Meetei Council (WMC), Assam Unit, will stage a protest in Guwahati on May 19.

The protest demonstration will be carried out at Manipur Basti Rajbari, stated a release from WMC Assam Unit general secretary, L Pankaj Singh on Thursday. The move was taken during a meeting of WMC Assam State Unit Executive Committee held on Wednesday, it stated. 

It asserted that repeated demands have been made to the chief minister to send the two reports, i.e., Ethnography and the latest Socio-Economic reports, to the Centre for inclusion of Meetei in the ST List of India. However it has not been sent till date, it said.

It expressed grave concern over the situation of the Meetei diaspora in Assam, their existence and urged the CM to hasten steps to send the needed reports for Meetei community inclusion in ST list to save them from possible extinction. It further urged all the Meeteis in Assam to join the protest.
