Villages flooded, houses displaced in Churachandpur

Saikot MLA Paulienlal Haokip and officials visited the flood-hit areas in Churachandpur on Saturday and distributed relief materials to the people.

Many villages were flooded and 50 households displaced after the Tuitha River overflowed due to the continuous and heavy rainfall received this week in Churachandpur.

Villages located at the downstream of the Tuitha river, including New Zoveng, Zomunnuam, Nazareth and Kerit, Neihsial Veng, Meetei Chiratian Leikai  etc. were  flooded. Members of the displaced households had to take shelter in safer places due to inundation by the flood.

There has been no major loss of property or human casualties being reported till the filing of this report.

Meanwhile, Saikot assembly constituency MLA Paulienlal Haokip visited the affected areas on Saturday morning. He visited Zomunnuam village, Neihsial veng, and Nazareth village and distributed relief materials. He assured to erect retaining walls at certain locations and promised to distribute foodstuff.

SDO Churachandpur Darun Kumar also visited the flood hit areas and the makeshift relief camps set up by different philanthropic organisations. He provided immediate relief materials. He said that they are providing dal, rice, etc. as immediate relief and will provide more through the District Disaster Management Committee headed by the DC.

Sources said that the Churachandpur assembly constituency MLA LM Khaute also visited the area on Friday and provided relief materials to the flood victims. He was accompanied by the DC and SDO of Churachandpur, during which he also instructed the District administration to spare no efforts in containing the flood and providing relief materials.
