Villagers must cooperate to ensure communal harmony: MLA Dipu

"It is only through cooperation among the various communities settled at Bitiang village in Noney district that the village has seen peace and harmony."

Villagers of Bitiang, Noney district should cooperate with each other in order to bring communal harmony, said Hill Areas Committe chairman MLA Dinganglung Gangmei (Dipu).

Dipu was speaking during the erection of the monolith of the 19th Khunbu/Khunbu of Bitiang, Noney district on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dipu Gangmei, as chief guest, said various communities are settling in Bitiang village  and it is only through cooperation among the communities that the village has seen peace and harmony. More cooperation is needed in order to bring more communal harmony, he said.

The function was attended by MLA Chandel AC, SS Olish as special guest, Jangamlung Panmei, former minister and Dangmei Tanchunglung, jury member of Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland).

As a part of the function, the Khunbu monolith was unveiled by Rev Ashapou Thaimei, Pastor Thenjang Baptist Church, RBCC.

The Khunbus and Khullakpas of neighbouring villages attended the Khunbu feasting ceremony of Pou Gainamtuang Panmei. He is the 19th Khunbu of the village.

The ceremony was celebrated to mark the coronation of Gainamtuang Panmei as 19th Khunbu of the Bitiang village after the death of his predecessor Chingkhuchung Panmei.

The Khunbu is in the topmost hierarchy structure as per the practice of the Bitiang (Laphok) custom. The literal meaning of Khunpu/Khunbu is owner of the village.
