Manipur Transport Minister Khashim Vashum on Tuesday announced that his department officials will start verification of driving licences and will spread road safety awareness in every nook and corner of the state.
He was speaking at the observation of National Road Safety Month, 2024 and the launch of the mobile awareness campaign organised by the department of Transport, government of Manipur at Manipur State Transport.
Addressing the gathering, the Transport minister said that although it is a small programme, raising awareness to the people for road safety is extremely important. He stressed that one must know how to drive safely or else cases of accidents will increase.
Even if the people have driving skill, they are unaware of road safety and disregard the value of their vehicles, he said. Maintaining road safety will not only help in extending the life span of vehicles, but also prevent accidents, he said.
Parents and officials should be extremely serious when it comes to getting and taking a driving licence. The official of the transport department will verify the driving licence, he added. He also raised serious concerns about the prevalence of drunken driving in the state.
Appealing to the people of the state to abide by traffic rules, he said that drivers not following the prescribed speed limits are another cause of concern. To prevent such cases, the department of Transport and police are working in coordination, he added.
He also informed that night time accidents are highly frequent and the department is working to minimise them. The programme was attended by Transport department secretary Michael Achom; deputy director of Transport department David Elangbam.
