K. Vanlalvena of the Mizo National Front (MNF) won the lone Rajya Sabha seat of Mizoram on Friday.
MNF is the principal ruling party in the state. The MNF candidate defeated his nearest rival B. Lalchhanzova of Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) by a huge margin.
In the 40-member Legislative Assembly of Mizoram, the MNF candidate got 27 votes while the ZPM candidate got only 7 votes and the Congress got 5 votes.
Dr. Lallianchunga was the candidate of the Congress party.
Meanwhile, an Assembly official disclosed to the media that BJP legislator Dr. Buddha Dhan Chakma did not cast his vote. After the result was declared, elated K. Vanlalvena said he would try his best for the welfare and development of Mizoram.
Until he was nominated as the MNF candidate, K Kanlalvena was the president of the MNF’s youth wing. It can be recalled here that K. Vanlalvena had lost to Congress candidate Lal Thanzara in the by-poll to Aizawl North-III assembly seat in November 2015. K Vanlalvena is a former student leader, too.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha member-elect thanked Mizoram Chief Minister and MNF president Zoramthanga, party MLAs and workers for giving him the opportunity and extending support.
The 50-year-old former student leader turned politician also lauded the party policy and ideology as the best for developing Mizoram.
Born in January 1970 at East Lungdar village in Serchhip district, K. Vanlalvena worked as a high school teacher under the State government after he graduated from Pachhunga University College (PUC) in 1993.
