UMMWDO observes Nupi Lan

UMMDWO president Anwari Noorjahan called upon all people of Manipur to break the communal wall and unite in fighting off fringe elements which posed threats to the integrity of the state.

Joining the rest of the state, United Manipur Muslim Women Development Organisation (UMMWDO) also observed ‘Nupi Lan’ at Hatta, Imphal on Tuesday.

UMMDWO president Anwari Noorjahan called upon all people of Manipur to break the communal wall and unite in fighting off fringe elements which posed threats to the integrity of the state.

“The observance is a reminder of the zeal and courage of the people of Manipur. We do not bow down to powers which threatens our unity and integrity,” she said.

She stated that the second Nupi Lan kicked off around 1939 to challenge the malicious intent of the British colonisers who saw profits before the people.

“They did not have any regard for the people of Manipur. This triggered the women to rise up as one and take on the armed mighty colonisers without any weapons,” she added.

She maintained that Nupi Lan is the shining example of Manipuri women and their unwavering courage. She further called upon all people not to be swayed by disruptive rumours which could create rifts between communities and to stand united for peaceful Manipur.

AMMOCOC president SM Jalal, advocate Alhaj Md Rabi Khan, AMMSO advisor Kh Ayub Shah among others were present during the observance.

Meanwhile, Women Forum, Oriental College, also observed the 84th Nupilal Ningshing Numit on Tuesday at the conference hall of the college in Imphal.

The teaching staff and students of the college paid floral tribute to the to the brave Imas who have fought against the British colonial rule.

The principal of the college Soraisam Ranjit Singh, L. Ibeni Devi, HOD, Mathematics Department & Chairperson of Women Forum, Ch. Somorendra, Co-ordinator IQAC and M. Lokendro Vice-President, Oriental College Teachers Association (OCTA) were the presidium members as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

 Assistant Professor Department of History, O Daneil spoke about the Nupilal and its significance as a resource person.

He pointed out that the legacy of anti-colonial struggle specifically led by women in Manipur will remain unparalleled.

It may be noted that a two-day Self-Defence Camp for girl students was also organised as a part of the observation.
