Garbage dumped at Viewland zone II in Ukhrul remains unattended for the last several weeks, posing health hazards and polluting the environment due to poor waste management and alleged negligence of the authority concerned.
Speaking to the Imphal Free Press, one Apam Huishuwo, a resident of Viewland zone II in Ukhrul headquarters, said that several garbage piled up at the local waste dumping site are supposed to be collected and disposed of at the waste disposal site. However, the wastes were still found scattered at road side, much to the dismay of the residents, he added.
“The place where wastes are deposited has drawn for many stray dogs and flies. The smell from the rotting garbage poses a serious threat to the residents,” he said, raising concern on the matter.
He urged the authorities concerned to promptly look into the matter so that the menace posed by poor waste management is addressed and no local is exposed to diseases.
When the Imphal Free Press visited the dumping site, huge piles of waste, including used diapers, plastics and rotten kitchen wastes etc. were found littered, emanating bad odour and posing health hazards to the surrounding areas.
One, Sem Kaping, who is also a local resident decried the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities towards the poor management of wastes in the district.
