Two drug smugglers have been arrested and a consignment of suspected brown sugar weighing 1233 grams seized from their possession at Gilgal veng, D Phailien, Churachandpur district, police sources said on Saturday.
According to the police, the two were arrested at 6.20 pm Friday by a police team led by SI Khamchinpau Tunglut and ASI Zothanglor of Churachandpur Police Station along with Robert Okram, SDC Tuibuong under the supervision of the district ASP (L/O) and OC.
The arrested two were identified as one Limkholet Lhungdim and one Nengtinhoi, both hailing from D Lhangjol village in Churachandpur district, police said.
The police said the arrest was made following a tip-off received on Friday, 4:30 pm about the smuggling of contraband drugs within Gilgal veng.
The police team rushed to the area and proceeded to the house of one Chochong, wife of Y Yaima of Gilgal veng, where the drugs were said to be kept. On seeing the police party approaching, two female and a male fled from the house, the police said.
On reaching the house, a search was conducted in the presence of the executive magistrate and local witnesses and a huge consignment suspected to be brown sugar packed in 100 soap cases were found inside the bedroom of the house, the police added.
The police further said some of the team members pursued the fleeing persons in a red Maruti Gypsy without registration and intercepted them at Gouchinkhup veng. Two persons, identified as one Limkholet Lhungdim, 42, (driver of the red Maruti Gypsy), son of Khatkhongam and one Nengtinhoi, 35, wife of Paongam Simte, both hailing from D Lhangjol village, revealed that they brought the 100 soap cases of suspected brown sugar from one Ngamlet Lhungdim of Phoilen village and kept in the house of Chochong for selling to prospective buyers.
The two were brought to the house of Chochong and the suspected brown sugar was found to weigh 1233 grams, excluding the weight of the soap cases. The suspected brown sugar was seized along with the red Maruti Gypsy and mobile phone at 6 pm and the two persons arrested at 6:20 pm, the police said.
A case under FIR No 164(10)2022 Churachandpur Police Station u/s 21(c)/29/60(3) NDPS Act has been registered for further investigation, the police added.
