Transgender activist Malem Thongam’s unwavering commitment to peace in Manipur has entered its 13th day as she continues her hunger strike, undeterred by arrests and hospital visits.

Malem Thongam initiated the hunger strike at New Delhi on February 22 and has been protesting later in various parts of Imphal, with her latest demonstration held in front of the Western Gate of the historic Kangla Fort on Wednesday.

Accompanied by fellow transgender activists, including Shanta Khurai, Malem has been drawing attention to the prolonged violence plaguing Manipur.

Despite being picked up by city police after about an hour of protest and subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, Malem remains resolute in her demand for peace.

Speaking to the media, she highlighted the alarming levels of violence and firing incidents that have gripped the state since May 3, 2023, affecting the livelihoods and futures of Manipur’s youth.

Expressing concern over the uncertainty faced by Manipuri youths due to the ongoing unrest, Malem urged the government to take swift action to restore peace in the region.

She reaffirmed her determination to continue the hunger strike until her demands are met.
Malem’s dedication to her cause has been evident despite facing adversity as recent arrests by the Imphal police have not deterred her resolve.

Despite being detained on Saturday from a protest site in Khurai, Malem was released on bail on Monday, only to resume her protest at Singjamei the following day.

However, she was taken to JNIMS Hospital by the police the same day.

For 13 days, Malem has abstained from solid food and liquids, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to the cause of peace in Manipur.
