Three people were arrested and suspected opium weighing approximately 2.445 kg was seized from their possession by a team of combined security forces at Haokhongphai Lungther Junction under Nongpok Sekmai Police station on Sunday at around 12.45 pm, police sources said.
The police said the arrested persons have been identified as one Letsuanthang Vaiphei (26), son of Tongginthang Vaiphei; Ngamkhohou Khongsai (33), son of Ngamlun Khongsai, both from Sontak Saijang village, Senapati district and Somithan Zimik (18), son of Ringphangam Zimik from Phungcham Village, Ukhrul district.
Acting on a tip off, a combined team of Thoubal commando and a column of 16 AR, along with a team of Nongpok Sekmai Police station led by O Wangkhomba, additional SP (Ops) Thoubal and assisted by Inspector K Nitaranjan Singh OC, Thoubal Commando, under the supervision of Jogeshchandra Haobijam, Senior Superintendent of Police, Thoubal district, carried out patrolling at Haokhongphai Lungther Junction under Nongpok Sekmai Police station at around 11.30 am.
According to the police, the three arrested people came on a black Pulsar bike with registration number MN01AE 2108 from Haokhongphai side towards Lungther side. The combined team found one black polythene containing five different plastic packets containing suspected opium weighing 2.445 kg (approx), including the weight of the plastic wrappers from their possession, the police added.
The three persons, along with the seized suspected opium and vehicle, have been handed over to Nongpok Sekmai Police station and a case has been registered for further investigation.
