Manipur State Pharmacy Council president RK Basumani on Friday raised concerns over the improper storage of drugs, emphasising that their effectiveness can be compromised if not stored under the correct conditions.

Speaking at the launch of an awareness campaign on safety, efficiency, affordability, and quality of drugs at the DCA of Medical Directorate, RD Wing, Imphal, Basumani highlighted the risks associated with storing drugs in rooms with roofs and walls made of GI sheet. He explained that the GI sheet can raise the temperature inside the room, potentially degrading the quality and effectiveness of the drugs stored there.

The event was jointly organised by the Manipur State Pharmacy Council and Drug Control Administration, Medical Directorate.

Basumani also urged the public to be vigilant when purchasing drugs and ensure that pharmacies display their certification.

He emphasised the importance of pharmacists wearing aprons and providing a cash memo for every drug purchase.

"The cash memo serves as proof to conduct investigations against pharmacies regarding the storage conditions of drugs, especially if patients experience adverse effects after taking them," he added.

Drug inspector of Medical Directorate Y Ronel Singh echoing similar concerns, emphasised the need to monitor the entire supply chain system of drugs.

Pointing out instances where drugs meant to be stored in refrigerators were found kept openly in some pharmacies, he urged consumers to be aware of such issues by reading the storage instructions when buying drugs.

The inspector also revealed that the government has granted the Manipur State Pharmacy Council the authority to inspect pharmacies for irregularities and warned of legal consequences for pharmacies that fail to adhere to the minimum standards and protocols set by the government.

According to the Manipur State Pharmacy Council, there are approximately 4,000 certified pharmacies in the state, including both wholesalers and retailers.

The council aims to ensure that all these pharmacies maintain the highest standards of drug storage and quality to protect public health.
